Working with Galvanised Steel

Galvanised steel is commonly used where corrosion resistance and durability are required without the cost of stainless steel. At LGM Engineering, we laser cut, fold, and fabricate galvanised sheet for industrial, commercial, and external applications. The zinc coating provides long-term protection against corrosion, making galvanised steel suitable for environments exposed to moisture and weather.

We work primarily with pre-galvanised sheet steel, supplied with a consistent zinc coating applied during manufacture. This material is widely used for ducting, enclosures, brackets, cabinets, and general fabrication where protection against corrosion is essential. Careful processing is required to maintain coating integrity while achieving accurate, repeatable components.

All galvanised steel is processed in-house using fibre laser cutting and CNC press brake forming. Appropriate cutting parameters and handling procedures are used to minimise coating disruption and maintain edge quality. Where welding is required, processes are selected to achieve strong, durable joints suitable for structural and functional assemblies.

If you are unsure whether galvanised steel is the right choice for your application, our team can advise based on corrosion exposure, fabrication requirements, finish expectations, and cost considerations.

Processing Information

1

Laser Cutting

Galvanised steel is laser cut using controlled parameters to achieve accurate profiles while minimising disruption to the zinc coating. This process delivers clean edges and consistent results for both thin gauge and thicker sheet components.

2

Folding & Forming

Galvanised steel is folded on CNC press brakes using appropriate tooling and bend allowances. Controlled forming ensures accurate angles and repeatable results while maintaining the integrity of the protective zinc coating.

3

Welding

Galvanised steel is not typically welded due to the zinc coating, which produces hazardous fumes when heated. For this reason, we generally avoid welding galvanised material and instead recommend alternative fabrication methods, post-fabrication galvanising, or the use of suitable mild steel grades where welded assemblies are required.
